Monday, July 10, 2017 St Michael’s Church in the centre of Bath hosts a concert on Saturday July 22 supporting the British Heart Foundation. This charity is certainly close to the hearts of members of The Bath Chorus who will be performing ‘choral favourites’ that evening. It is almost a year since the untimely death of Tony Pickett. Tony who lived in Frome was a member of the bass section of The Bath Chorus who died suddenly and unexpectedly of a heart attack in July last year. A much-loved member of the choir, and after discussion with his partner, the British Heart Foundation was chosen to benefit from a number of concerts and special events during this year. Simon Kale who sings in The Bath Chorus ran the London Marathon raising over £5,000 and it is hoped to reach a target in excess of £12,000 by the end of this year. The July concert at St Michael’s is a free entry evening featuring soprano soloist Charlotte Newstead from Bristol. It will feature choral favourites introduced by Grenville Jones, the founder conductor of The Bath Chorus. There will be a retiring collection for BHF. “If you love choral music then this is an evening not to be missed,” said Grenville. Monday 3rd July, 2017 The popular Devizes Good Afternoon Choir will be staging their next concert at the Corn Exchange on Saturday July 29th at 7.30pm. The 100 strong choir who meet at St Andrews Church every Friday afternoon from 2-4pm, under the leadership of Baths music-man Grenville Jones will welcome the top barbershop quartet, ShoBaSs as guests for their concert. Devizes Good Afternoon Choir attracts members from across Wiltshire and membership numbers have grown steadily from when Grenville launched the choir back in 2011. Since that time it has raised many hundreds of pounds for local charities. Famous for their appearances on the BBC Last Choir Standing series and concerts around the UK and Europe, the choir last July lost a much-loved member of their bass section, Tony Pickett. Tony’s sudden death from a heart attack came as a great shock to the members of Bath Male Choir. After discussion with Tony’s partner, choir members decided that they would raise money through 2017 for the British Heart Foundation. The new CD entitled ‘Reflections’ features 14 songs and is available through the choir website www.bathmalechoir.org. The choir has already raised £8,000 this year. Simon Kale ran the London Marathon two weeks ago raising £5,000 and fellow bass Steve West organised a night of music which raised a further £2,000. Further concerts have added a £1,000 and there are a number of other fundraising events and concerts in the pipeline, including a visit of the famous Morriston Orpheus Choir on Saturday October 14. Thursday, March 9, 2017 Three of Bath’s leading groups join forces for a concert of popular music on Saturday March 18. It takes place at St Swithin’s Church, Walcott, featuring The Bath Spa Band, the Bath Welcome Choir and the Choir from the Norland College. Proceeds from the concert will support the Goldies Charity and it’s work with older vulnerable people in Bath and North East Somerset. Bath music man Grenville Jones leads the Welcome Choir and the Norland Choir who are giving their services to support Goldies. Grenville said; “With increasing numbers attending our fun sing and smile sessions across the area we now want to reach out with more sessions and also to be able to offer community bus transport to those who are unable through infirmity to attend. Tuesday, April 12, 2016 He’s written a novel about a fictional choir based in Truro and on Saturday May 7, Bath’s music man Grenville Jones brings two of his ‘real’ choirs to sing at Truro Methodist Church. Grenville is Patron of the Cornwall Community Choirs who will be hosting the FREE ADMISSION concert with a retiring collection for Cornwall Hospice Care. Last year Grenville published his novel ‘Deep Harmony’ which is based on the loves and lives of a mixed-voice choir in Cornwall called The Verlis Singers. Verlis is thinly disguised as Truro and readers have recognised many of the places referred to in the book which was published on Amazon and Kindle. The May 7 concert is entitled Let The People Sing with the 200 strong Cornwall Community Choir and members of the Bath and Devizes Good Afternoon Choirs, renewing the friendship between Grenville and Neil Shepherd, who leads the Cornwall Community Choir across the county. Monday, March 14, 2016 They love to sing at the Devizes Good Afternoon Choir, which meets every Friday afternoon from 2pm-4pm in St Andrew’s Church in Long Street, Devizes. On Saturday April 9 the choir will be joining forces with the Warminster Community Choir to stage a fun night of music and song at the Devizes Corn Exchange. Doors for the concert will open at 7pm and ADMISSION IS FREE with a retiring collection at the end of the concert supporting the Devizes branch of Parkinson’s UK. Wednesday 2nd March 2016 A new Bristol afternoon choir is being launched in April at Henleaze. Bath’s Mr Music, Grenville Jones, has a reputation for getting hundreds of people singing. He is launching a new daytime no-audition fun community choir for retired people in Henleaze on April 4 called the Bristol Good Afternoon Choir. Grenville leads a number of music projects across the West and beyond. He is also founder of the Goldies charity, NOT choirs but with 150 daytime sing and smile social sessions in community rooms and church halls now across the West of England, Essex, Hants, Staffs Yorkshire and South Wales. The Good Afternoon Choirs are one of his hugely successful choir projects with 250 singers in the Bath and Devizes weekly groups. The Bristol Good Afternoon Choir will meet at Trinity Henleaze United Reformed Church on Mondays from 2-4pm and everyone is welcome to go along and find out all about the choir. The Keynsham Good Afternoon Choir also starts this month with the first rehearsal at Keynsham Methodist Church from 2pm until 4pm on Wednesday March 16. Says Grenville: “We sing all sorts of music – from folk songs and spirituals to Abba and Queen. It’s all about having fun, making new friends and enjoyment.” Ben England is conductor of the new choir. He studied music at the University of Bristol, specialising in conducting and choral music. He is a singer, pianist and guitarist who is in demand as a soloist across the South West. Ben has led choirs and singing groups in and around Bristol for over 20 years, and has worked with groups of all sizes and all ages. An Advanced Skills Teacher, Ben was until 2016 Director of Music at Colston’s Girls’ School. He is also the Musical Director of the Bristol Gilbert and Sullivan Society. Wednesday, February 10, 2016 Music man Grenville Jones will be raising money this year to support the work of the Bath branch of Parkinson’s UK. Grenville leads a number of choirs in the area and last year his singers helped to raise over £14,000 for local charities. An open day at Oldfield Park Baptist Church raised nearly £2,000 for Nepal’s earthquake appeal and his support of the National Osteoporosis Society’s Christmas concert in November raised over £7,000 for that organisation. Grenville’s chosen local appeal for 2015 was the Three Ways School Teacup Appeal and concerts in Bath Abbey and other local churches raised over £4,000. Over in Devizes Grenville’s hugely popular Good Afternoon Choir also raised £1,000 for Wiltshire charities in 2015 through their concerts. Grenville said; “I want to support the Bath branch of Parkinson’s this year as I have been invited to speak at their Saturday morning group on a couple of occasions. I feel it is very important that smaller local organisations are helped with their fundraising to reach out to local people and I hope to raise a decent amount for them at a number of concerts during the year.” Grenville’s first concert for Parkinson’s will be on Saturday March 19 at St Swithin’s Church where Grenville’s celebrated Bath Male Choir will perform with special guests, the Malmesbury Community Choir. The second concert will be will be at St Michael’s Church, Bath, on Good Friday, March 25, featuring his Bath Chorus choir. Theirs is a family link to this concert as Grenville’s son Laurie conducts the Malmesbury Choir. Monday October 5, 2015 One of the leading male choirs in the UK will be performing at Abbots Bromley School on Saturday October 31. Bath Male Choir reached the final stages of the BBC’s Last Choir Standing series in front of an audience of millions. At that time the judge Russell Watson dubbed them the ‘Wall of Sound’ and they have since sung all across the United Kingdom and last year undertook a hugely successful tour of Japan. The concert, which starts at 7.30pm, also features The Heath Chorus from Uttoxeter, conducted by Helen Morgan. Anne Griffiths is a member of The Heath Chorus and leads the development of The Golden-Oldies Charity in Staffordshire. Goldies, as it is fondly known, brightens the lives of older people through its daytime singing and activity sessions. The founder, Grenville Jones who lives in Bath, is also founder conductor of Bath Male Choir and he is bringing his choir to Uttoxeter to raise money and support new sessions across the Staffordshire area. Anne Griffiths said; “Goldies is taking off in our area and I am so pleased that The Heath Chorus are performing at our concert. I have heard Bath Male Choir sing in Bath Abbey and they really are an amazing choir.
