Monday, March 31, 2014 One of the United Kingdom’s best known choir conductors will be visiting Japan later this year. Grenville Jones who lives in Bath in the West of England is widely regarded through his leadership of a number of choirs and his work with the BBC in England and as a founder of a charity whose Patron is Sir Cliff Richard. The City of Bath Male Choir arrive in Kyoto on Sunday November 1. They spend four days in the city and on Japan Culture Day, Monday November 3, will be the first ever British Male Choir to sing as guests of the Bacchus Festival in Itami City. This festival has a long history and is run under the Kansai Choral Association, one of the nine divisional associations of the Japan Choral Association. The choir travel to Tokyo on Wednesday November 5 with a number of visits including a visit to the British School in Tokyo who are celebrating their 25th anniversary this year. Grenville Jones started the Bath Male Choir eight years ago. It reached the finals of a BBC prime-time national television show which was screened on Saturday evenings. ‘Last Choir Standing’ was seen by millions and has also been shown on the BBC World Entertainment Channel. One of the judges was English celebrity tenor Russell Watson who called the City of Bath Male Choir ‘the wall of sound’. Grenville has received many awards including a Doctor of Letters from Bath Spa University. This honorary degree recognised his work with choirs and in communities of the United Kingdom. Grenville leads six choirs and is also musical director for the famous Norland College which trains young ladies to become nannies and has a world-wide reputation. He is also a founder of a charity called Golden-Oldies which, through music, brightens the lives of hundreds of elderly people throughout Southern England and Wales. He has worked alongside many of the UK’s leading celebrity singers including Katherine Jenkins, Aled Jones, Jamie Cullum, Alfie Boe, Lee Mead and Hayley Westenra. Through his links with BBC television Grenville has worked with Gareth Malone and even once provided a choir to perform for a Hollywood blockbuster produced by Steven Spielberg.
